Last week, we visited Amy Goodwin in her new studio space located in West Concord, MA. Amy has only been in her new space for less than a month but she's been hard at work prepping for her solo exhibition here at Albright Art Gallery.

Amy describes her work as the place between sleep and dreams. Her works are an escape from the waking world; a journey to a place where positivity and beauty flood the mind. Although her work is very personal, containing numerous self portraits surrounded by vividly painted roses, there is a universal aspect to the work through references of art history that remain hidden within the dripping gardens. Be on the look out for announcements for Amy's exhibition WHAT SHE SAW which goes on display in March 2012.

Concord Art Association- Members Juried I Exhibition: Painting and Sculpture

Got a chance to head down the street to the Concord Art Association to check out their Members Juried I Exhibition: Painting and Sculpture. Juried by artist and curator, Kathleen O'Hara. It is a really great show, with lots of unique artists. Mediums include, oil, acrylic, collage, marble, ceramics and more. Landscape paintings, abstract pieces, still lifes, paintings of animals, sculptures made out of pencil tips... this exhibition has a little bit of everything! If you are in the area, this show is highly recommended and free! The Concord Art Association's hours are Tues-Sat 10am-4:30pm, Sun 12pm-4pm and they are located at 37 Lexington Rd, in Concord. Albright Art is excited to announce the opening of George Herman’s second solo show at the gallery: Mans and Other. The work will be displayed January 10th through March 11th. Everyone is welcome to visit with George at the Opening Reception Thursday January 12th from 6pm to 8pm. Come gather with friends, artists and art enthusiasts to celebrate George's new experimental work.

George Herman is a versatile painter whose work travels through abstraction, landscape-based imagery, and figurative work. Within his broad range of subject matters is a link that ties them all together—his process. By scraping down his past paintings, George finds remains of ideas that were once covered up or overlooked. He builds from those hidden shapes and textures to form new works that keep him and his viewers inspired.

Mans and Other is a collection of paintings that George refers to as realistic portraits of imaginary people. He takes different facial features from multiple beings—in newspaper ads, old yearbooks and even mug shots—and creates an entirely new person. Through scraping and repainting, George portrays a familiar friend but also an unsettling stranger at the same time.

George Herman has been working as an artist in the New England area for thirty years. He has been the recipient of several Massachusetts honors for painting and printmaking. He was in the 9^th Triennial Exhibit at the Fuller Museum in Brockton and the 8^th Biennial at the Fitchburg Art Museum. George lives in Lexington, MA with his family and is a member of the Maynard ArtSpace where he creates most of his work.

GIVE ART 2011

The GIVE ART exhibition is finally on display! We received so many submissions to our open call for artists and it was a real challenge to sift through so many great artists' work. We narrowed down the over-eighty-submissions to nine creative New England-based artists to be the faces of GIVE ART this year. Alicia Carson, Darthea Cross, Raphael Griswold, Teddy O'Connor, Ali Osborn, A. Campbell Payne, Rachel Prouty, Anna Slezak and George Stavropoulos all brought inspiring, cutting-edge work to the gallery. The show is colorful and quirky, featuring works of all types of artistic media including paintings, digital prints, cyantotypes and zines. All of the work is accessibly priced to help promote the gifting of art during the holiday shopping season while giving public exposure to all of the artists. The show is up until January 8th, 2012. Also be sure to check out our new Gallery Gift Shop featuring artist books, MoMA gifts, Simon Pearce glass and new prints from various artists in our flat file!

GOING PLACES Opening Reception

The opening reception for Raphael Griswold's GOING PLACES was a big success! Friends, family and art enthusiasts admired the intelligent, witty works as sounds of Raphael's video and sound clips echoed throughout the gallery space. Guests were given a map of the gallery drawn by the artist that included information about each individual work along with GPS coordinates for each location that the pieces depicted. Visitors followed the map, travelled through Raphael's places and got a glimpse into the world through his eyes.
GOING PLACES will be on view at Albright Art Gallery until November 6th, 2011.

2011 GIVE ART Exhibition

Deadline October 7, 2011

GIVE ART 2011 will exhibit in the main gallery at Albright Art from Nov 8, 2011 – Jan 8, 2012. This exhibit encourages gifting of art during the active holiday shopping season while also giving emerging artists public exposure.

The gallery encourages submissions of smaller format original art, monotypes, monoprints, and works in editions of 20 or less. Artists receive 50% of the purchase price when a work is sold. Artists set prices for their work, and works of retail value $300 or less are encouraged. All work must be hang-ready. Entries are due by October 7, and selected artists will be contacted by October 15 to schedule an in-person viewing of works.

To submit work, to the 2011 GIVE ART Exhibit, send an email to art@albrightartgallery.com with “GIVE ART SUBMISSION” as the subject line. Multiple emails from the same artist are acceptable in order to send multiple image files; however, please submit no more than five images per artist. Entries must be received by October 7, 2011.

Include/attach in this email the following:

1. artist statement
2. resume including your address, phone number and website if applicable
3. up to five JPEG images of your work labeled in the format: LastName_FirstName_No.jpg (eg: Duchamp_Marcel_1.jpg)
4. an image identification list with your name, the image number corresponding to the image file, year the work was executed, title, dimensions and medium used, and retail price for the work

    Celebration of NOW is a collection of works of varied sizes that are the externalization of her appreciation of being alive. She invites her viewers to celebrate her spiritual journey of hope and discovery through jubilant colors, organic shapes and melodious textures. As YUKO works, she follows where her energy and curiosity take her during the present moment. YUKO's personal exploration of love, imagination and life is her attempt to awaken our consciousness and help us discover the freedom of human creativity and inner beauty.
    A Tokyo-born artist, YUKO was raised in Japan, Paris, London and the USA. She came to Boston in 1988, where she studied at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and Massachusetts College of Art and Design. YUKO now exhibits her work through solo and group exhibitions internationally. She is the recipient of multiple awards including the first prize for the cover for Artscope in 2007, the Manhattan Art International Best In Painting award in 2007, and South End News' Best in Public Art award in 2009. YUKO currently lives and works in Boston's South End with her husband, artist Andreas Gmur.

We have been very busy the last few weeks preparing and setting up for Barbara Moody's new exhibit Nature: An Intimate Gaze. The show was hung and ready to be admired on May 10th and last week we held a special artist reception for Barbara. We were really excited with the turn-out! Friends of the gallery and local art enthusiasts all gathered in celebration of Barbara's colorful, surrealist-inspired paintings.

We are very pleased to have the work of Sing Hanson in our main gallery. The new exhibit features Sing's digital photographs of close-up views of sides of trains. Her work has a painterly quality to it that is very unique.

Artist Statement

I am a painter by nature, though I work as a photographer. I attempt to paint with a camera. My images sometimes blur the lines between the two media, and also between realism and abstraction.

Concepts of repurposing, reworking, and adaptive reuse, as seen here in the SIDETRACKS series, have framed my work over the last decade. These images of decommissioned railroad cars rusting and peeling away on unused tracks become metaphors for the passage of time, the ephemeral nature of apparently concrete objects and the triumph of repurposing them through the creative act.

My photographs are digitally based and printed on archival papers with long-lasting Epson Ultrachrome inks in signed editions of no more than 15. Generally I make my own prints, giving me control of the images throughout the process and a flexibility that photo labs cannot.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My paintings are complex, improvisational compositions of color, motion, and texture meant to convey feelings related to people, places or events, from recent memories and the distant past. The paintings are physical representations of moods and rhythms, expressing drama or subtlety, excitement or calm, joy or sadness in a multilayered visual experience that, when successful, evokes the original inspiration with unexpected richness and depth.

The works in this show are a mix of purely abstract pieces based on a particular state of mind and semi-abstracted works reflecting a more recent interest in evoking a sense of place — a rainy Maine road, a snowy Massachusetts field, Walden Pond in spring. During the process of painting, the specifics of place are both hidden and revealed.

These newer paintings also reflect an increased interest in a looser, more fluid surface to allow for spontaneous mark-making, more nuanced layering and a lighter, defter touch with the paint itself. Additionally, I have found myself working at extremes of scale, creating very large canvases that encourage the viewer to be absorbed by and look deeply into the work as well as smaller works that offer a more intimate glimpse into a moment or place.

Ultimately, all of this work is about creating a strong visual and emotional connection to an experience that is deeply personal and potentially universal.

Jim grew up in Texas and moved to New England to study at Wesleyan University. Before settling down in Concord, he lived in Boston, Singapore, Portland, Maine and New York City. In addition to pursuing painting over the years, he has worked as a designer, art director, creative director and consultant for several of the world’s leading publications and corporations, including the New York Times, Newsweek and Fortune magazines.

His work has been exhibited locally and nationally and is held in private collections around the country.

He lives and paints at his home near Walden Pond with his wife, the artist and writer Holly Harrison, and his budding artist daughter, Mira.

Raphael Griswold

Now showing in our back gallery are various works by the multi-media artist Raphael Griswold. Mr. Griswold has a degree in printmaking and has spent some time in Spain. He has had his work shown in a number of galleries across New England and Belgium over the past few years. Inspiration for the above print came partially from the minuteman statue by North Bridge in Concord, MA. The work is appropriately titled Minuteman and is displayed in a handmade frame built by the artist.

Also in the gallery is work from Mr. Griswold's Closed City Cereal Project (CCCP). These painted cereal boxes have received much attention in our gallery, each is inspired by the closed industrial cities of the former USSR. The titles are as equally interesting (and humorous) as the curious boxes themselves. We have four on display: (1) They'rrre Severomorsk!, (2) Snap, Crackle, Ghadzhiyevo, (3) I Gotta Have My Ostrovnoy, and (4) I'm Cuckoo for Gremikha!

Kate True: Summer Show

Tonight we are delighted to host an Artist Reception for the new exhibit in our gallery, Kate True: Summer Show. The show focuses on portraits of young family and friends and a series of sunsets inspired from friend's photos from around the world.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I came to painting from drawing, portraiture and filmmaking, and elements of all three pursuits inhabit my work. I'm interested in maintaining the sensual, graceful, or forceful line of a drawing while also developing a lushy painted surface which creates space and volume. In my figures and portraits I hope to distill an emotional experience into its barest representation, including only the most meaningful details, conveying both a sense of the mood and personality of the character, as well as hinting at the narrative that brought them to their particular situation. I'm interested in the way our bodies, gestures, and expressions can telegraph meaning so eloquently.

In my recent work I have begun to explore the intersection of landscape and figure. I'm interested in the way the environment affects the emotional experience of the subject as well as the viewer. In the paintings without a figure, a human presence is felt nonetheless, as a scene experienced through the distorting lens of memories. As a culture, we seem to have a new urgency to our wish to hold onto mementos of glorious sunsets and beautiful settings, because we sense that the splendor of the natural world is changing and perhaps slipping away. The process of making these paintings has become a meditation for me, on change, loss, and the touchingly human but futile attempt to hold onto a particular moment in time.

Nicholas Kozak is an alumni of UMass Dartmouth in Art Education with a concentration in painting. He paints from his studio at home in Westport, MA. Westport is his hometown and he has lived there most of his life. In an area where landscape and maritime scenes dominate galleries, he mainly paints genre painting (figurative combined with still-life). Though his work is realism, he paints in an abstract frame of mind, focusing on arrangements of shapes and colors, where composition is the ultimate goal over narrative.

Artist Statement:

My art is considered genre painting. More specifically, petit genre; a term referring to ordinary people and things in everyday life. It is not the subject matter that interests me most, but how these people and objects relate to each other and share the space around them. I enjoy painting the figure and still-life, but what I love the most is painting the shapes and colors that become those figures and still-life. While realist in nature, my work is the end result of this abstract process.

Re/Vision Closing Soon, Give Art to open!

Patricia Ward’s Book Arts installation Re/Vision will be closing this weekend, so catch is while it is still up!

Visitors who have stepped into the world created by Patricia Ward’s current installation walk away entranced. Some viewers comment on the depth of the work, others wonder at the intricate methods used in its creation, and writers walk away smirking. The eighteen miniature Book Arts works were created from the shreds of a novel of Ward’s for which she could not find a publisher.

The bridge between writing and Book Arts is complete in this not-for-sale installation at Albright art + craft. The pieces are moving in content and presentation, and simultaneously beautiful to view. Gallery owner Bonnie Albright met Ward when she came to visit the gallery this summer. Upon seeing Ward’s samples Albright immediately asked her to exhibit. This is the first installation at the new contemporary art gallery. While most shows at the gallery present artists’ works for sale, Albright intends to occasionally use the space for conceptually based installations. She is pleased at the overwhelming positive response.

Patricia Ward was born in Beirut, Lebanon and lived there through the brutal civil war. Her novel The Bullet Collection (Graywolf Press, 2003) received the GLCA New Writers Award, the Anahid Literary Award and the Hala Maksoud Award for Outstanding Emerging Writers. Her short stories, poems, and essays have appeared in a number of journals and anthologies, and she has held multiple residencies. In the past few years, Ward has transitioned from writing novels to Book Arts. She is an Artist Member of the Center for Book Arts in NY, where she also received a fellowship for the Fine Press & Letterpress Printing Seminar in 2005.

Albright is excited for the next gallery show, Give Art, which will focus on smaller paintings highly suitable for giving as gifts. Unlike other exhibits, customers can take their purchases away with them the same day, rather than waiting until the close of the exhibit. This vibrant show features seven local artists and will be open for viewing starting Tuesday, November 17. The show will remain up until December 23^rd.

Opening Tomorrow-New Work: Julie Vinette

Albright Art + Craft is pleased to announce its latest exhibition, New Work: Julie Vinette, opening tomorrow!

The solo exhibition will showcase the newest work by Marblehead-based artist Julie Vinette. The opening reception this Thursday, September 17 from 5 pm until 7 pm allows for an opportunity to meet the artist and enjoy conversation with fellow art enthusiasts. Vinette’s show consists of eight of her newest works; a comprisal of oil paintings, mixed media works on paper and on plywood from the past year. New Work displays Vinette’s ability to mesh very abstract concepts, harmonious colors, and forms. She attempts to visualize memory by using a range of media including collage, oil paint, pencil, encaustic, and found materials. Whatever the medium, her work is hazily representational and briming with vibrant color and movement.

The event will feature 200 plus artists, so definitely be sure to check it out for a unique and exciting local art experience. Admission is free, check their website for details and a map!

Need a faster fix? Head over to First Friday Open Studios at the SoWa Artists Guild on September 4 . The SoWa studios are open the first Friday of every month from 5 – 9pm to allow the public to watch the artists in action and to showcase their latest and greatest. Its a super accessible way to view art- free of charge, and parking is available! Located at 450 Harrison Ave. Boston, MA.

The Second Show Opening

Albright Art + Craft is pleased to announce a fun and successful opening and artist reception for The Second Show, on Thursday, August 6. The reception allowed a chance to converse with the artists and others while enjoying a glass of Spanish wine. Both artists attended to mix and mingle with our many attendees.

In The Second Show, local artists Susan Armstrong, of Concord, and Kathleen Quigley, have been brought together in a celebration of nature and color. The works chosen for this show are vibrant and soft, a true testament to the sweet New England summer. Armstrong’s work features acrylic paintings of wildlife flora, concentrating on the Concord River and other local water bodies. Her technique involves painting “en plein air” in order to experience the outdoors firsthand, shown in her attention to detail. Quigley also embraces these themes, using a larger canvas with oils to depict rich textural qualities. She is attracted to the essence and overwhelming sense of design within nature, paying tribute to the natural world of which we are a part.
